Our Baltimore Home

BmoreHome8

Even of my earliest memories the most vivid are those of home. A home-body, I guess you could call me, I’m typically found reading, quietly typing away on my blog, cleaning, playing with my baby girl, or exploring my immediate outdoor surroundings.

BmoreHome11

Home is where life happens, where you learn to love, find rest, bring your babies back to, teach your family, and build relationships through hospitality.

BmoreHome1

I store away a lot of memories and feelings in the cracks of the sidewalk, the creaks of the floorboards, the clanks of the sink.

To me, familiar patterns in the wood, the predictable squeaks of doors, and memorized streets, faces, and routes make a home comfortable, known, safe.

And leaving one for the other has always given me a bit of heartache, no matter how many frustrations I’ve had with that drawer that won’t close, the drain that wouldn’t empty, the ants that kept making themselves at home, or the lack of dishwasher in that tiny kitchen.

Because even in all those imperfections are treasured dreams and hopes that have been experienced and loved.

BmoreHome13

Home is one of the most important spaces in my little world, and I tend to have high expectations of it.

BmoreHome16

I often have a hard time imagining how I could love a new space as much as I’ve grown to love the one in which I immediately stood.

BmoreHome17

And this move from Greenville, SC to Baltimore, MD was no exception, especially since I had yet to see my new home. My Beloved had chosen it without me after a failed house-hunting trip that we took together, a responsibility I was none too pleased to relinquish to just him.

And wouldn’t you know it, he forgot to take pictures.

BmoreHome18

My imagination was running wild as we drove the slow, traffic bombarded route to Baltimore. “Would there be enough room for my craft supplies? Would the paint match my furnishings? Did the dishwasher I had been promised really work or was that just a ploy to get me to move? Was the landlady kindly? Was there enough room to spread out or would we be crammed in like dirty dishes on too small a counter? How was the lighting?” All very lofty and heaven-ward concerns, to be sure.

BmoreHome5

My heart was racing as we climbed the steps to our second floor apartment and opened the door for the very first time. But even my very first glimpse was enough to chase away all anxiety, replacing uncertainty with sheer gratitude.

BmoreHome21

The light, oh the light, was the gorgeous apartment’s finest adornment.

BmoreHome20W

A thorough exploration of my new digs was put on hold as I had 6 or so burly men hefting boxes and furniture up the stairs right on my heels. Snapping out of my daydream, I whirled around and began directing traffic, shoveling graham crackers in my tiny’s mouth to keep her content, and hurriedly coming up with a furniture floor-plan.

BmoreHome35

That hurried plan didn’t entirely suit me in the end, as I require many minutes of quiet reflection before acting on anything as serious as the question of where to place one’s bed.

BmoreHome9

So the next day I put my kind brother-in-law and dear, patient, gorgeous-apartment-selecting-husband to work by switching our bedroom furniture with Aletheia’s from one side of the house to the other.

Within a week, all rearranging and fussing and unpacking were over with, and I had a layout I could live with.

BmoreHome24

Ok, “live with” is a major understatement. I am spoiled rotten with this light-filled, neutrally-painted, closet-abundant, dishwasher-including, hardwood-floored home.

BmoreHome25,26C

I couldn’t be happier. Honestly.

BmoreHome27

It’s been over 2 weeks since we moved and I still smile stupidly ever single time I walk from one side of the house to the other as if I recently got engaged to the place or something. I have fallen in love with it already.

BmoreHome29W,30C

do call it home without hesitation {even if I do keep saying I live in Baltimore, SC . . . a slight crisis of geography confusion}.

BmoreHome32,33,34C

Beyond our darling accommodations, we’ve been met with the most loving, supportive, gospel-saturated community of believers here.

BmoreHome37

I believe this home wouldn’t be as dear without them.

BmoreHome4

They’ve stepped in and helped us move, given us pointers about living in the city, watched our baby, and already linked arms with us in dear gospel partnership.

BmoreHome6

I’ve been invited to others’ homes, playgroups, church outreaches, and had several people want to immediately identify our needs and meet them.

BmoreHome14

Reflecting on these beautiful, extravagant gifts from my Heavenly Father is bringing tears to my eyes as I consider His love for us, His undeserved favor, His goodness.

BmoreHome15

Without a doubt we’ve been transplanted here by His perfect design. It’s a story I would have never penned on my own. A home-body doesn’t naturally seek out adventure, after all. But that’s where He is re-shaping me, revising my near-sighted plans, and inviting me to step into His grand story.

Baltimore, you are home-sweet-home.

Hi Susanna, thank you for the comment you left on my blog : )
And oh my, what a beautiful, light filled apartment you have! My first thoughts on seeing the photos of the inside of your apartment was, ‘Oh! The light!’ and then you said the very same thing. My husband and I have just bought and moved into a new house, and before we had moved, one of my biggest wonderings was, ‘where will the light fall?’ because I love a light filled home : )
What a wonderful blessing to have such an amazing community of servant hearted people around you – it sounds like you will settle in and find fast friends very quickly.
